Dropbox, an application to save and share your files on the internet
To count with an additional storage unit always helps, especially in case of requiring a reinstallation of the operating system, to free space from our hard disk, or simply to have a backup of our most important files. The possibilities are even more if this disk it’s available online. DropBox will make this happen: virtual storage of our files, through a simple desktop application.
Compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux, DropBox allows us to protect valuable information on the net, creating a folder on our system files that will synchronize with our virtual disk on the internet. We have also the possibility to change that folder to choose, for example, synchronize a folder containing personal files, assuring us, a security copy of it.
Once we’ve downloaded and installed the application, we need to create an account with DropBox to be able to start uploading our data. Then we’ll need to choose among the different storage capacities available that this service offers, so we can start personalizing the application.
DropBox will create two folders inside the directory: Public and Photos. On the folder Public we can upload files that will be able to be accessed by others through the internet without the need to have access to our account. On the folder Photos we can upload our photo albums, to which others will be allowed to access with no need have access our DropBox account. Those who access our folders won’t be allowed to modify or delete anything, what makes this service highly safe.
Some of the most noticeable features of DropBox are that it doesn’t hog your internet connection, as we can manually set bandwidth limits; if there are changes on the files on our computer, DropBox will synchronize only the information that has been changed on them; synchronizes files of any type and size; transfers will resume where they left off if the connection drops, just to name a few of the.
DropBox also allows that others, to whom we give access, collaborate in our shared folders. Furthermore it gives us the power to deny the access to our public folders to those who we don’t want to have it. It’s important to point out that only those who have a link to the files on our folders will be able to access. This means that our folders aren’t browsable or searchable, you can only access them with a direct link.
Finally, we’ll be able to access DropBox from any mobile pone, including iPhone and iPod Touch, and automatically sync any photo we take or video we record.
Without a doubt, DropBox turns into a highly useful tool to help clear our hard disk, make sure to have a copy of our most important files, and at the same time, share our files with friends and acquaintances.
